Is India a difficult market to penetrate for the western big brands??

While studying for my masters in fashion Business ,we had a visiting teacher from Paris who was working for a famous brand and she said something very interesting. She said that India is like no other market in the world. It has it's own culture and a very strong 'Bollywood' influence which makes it one of the toughest markets to enter. This made me think long and hard. What I came up with is WHY Its so difficult. I am going to be writing a lot about fashion in India. The way we look at fashion. Why we are the way we are. Of cause all the different Indian clothes.
All the big fashion houses have to realise that India is a HUGE country. In spite of all it's differences, the poverty, ineducation and problems with politicians...as people we are very opinionated and not too easy to get influenced by marketing gimmick's. Even the most smartest Indian thinks with his heart. So that makes us very impulsive. Culture plays a strong part in every Indians fashion sense. Why we choose certain colours, why these perfumes? what makes us like these styles and not difficult to understand if you only understand the strong influence of culture and society. Most Indians love strong colours..we are not shy to wear the brightest and boldest of colours. Why? We seem to love the actual textile and appreciate its weave and the finish more than we seem to care about the shape. Why? I will try to explain all this in my posts and hopefully some of the western designers will adapt their style a little when they try to enter India.

  1. I actually read on FOX BUSINESS NEWS, that top Italian luxury companies will invest at least EUR150 million in India over the next 5 years.

Here's a quote from the article: "A joint report by the Confederation of Indian Industry and consulting firm A.T. Kearney estimates the Indian luxury products market to more than triple by 2015 from about $4.76 billion in 2009."

I think it's actually a really good market to enter, and one of the markets that will have a great impact on the fashion culture. As I wrote in our blog: we already saw a hint of that in LV's latest collection that celebrated the Diwali festival, which is an Indian festival. There is definitely a reason for celebrating it, the culture is extremely rich and that will reflect on the fashion world.
